Top ranked Northwest Missouri tops MSSU men 96-75

The 14th-ranked Missouri Southern men's basketball program got 29 points from Cam Martin, but the Lions fell Thursday night at home to No. 1 ranked Northwest Missouri, 96-75.

Southern (18-5, 11-3 MIAA MIAA) was led by Martin's night as he went 12-of-17 from the field and 4-of-5 from the free throw line, adding seven rebounds, as well. Elyjah Clark scored 18 points and dished out five assists, while Kinzer Lambert scored 14 points.

Northwest (23-1, 13-1 MIAA) was led by Trevor Hudgins who had a game-high 33 points on 10-of-19 from the field and 7-of-13 from long-range.










The Lions jumped out to a 5-0 lead after a jumper from Lambert and a three from Tharp and led 10-4 after a three from Clark with 16:31 left in the half. The Bearcats tied it at 12 with 14:41 left and a three from Parker Jennings with 13:49 left put Southern up 18-14.

Northwest took a 20-18 lead with 11:37 on the clock and led 27-22 with 8:36 to go. Southern went on a 9-5 run to get within one (32-31) after a layup from Martin with 5:44 on the clock, but the Bearcats went back up 40-33 with three to go. A layup from Martin with a minute on the clock got the Lions within five (44-39), but a late three from Northwest gave the Bearcats a 47-39 lead at the break.

The Lions got within two (51-49) after a three from Lambert with 16:42 left in the half, but the Bearcats rallied off a 15-4 run to go up 66-53, before a running jumper from Winston Dessesow stopped the run with 11 left on the clock. Southern got within ten twice more but couldn't close the gap.

The Lions shot 56 percent from the field and 88 percent from the free throw line.

Southern will be back in action this Saturday as the Lions play host to Missouri Western. Tip off is slated for 3:30 pm.
