The Missouri Southern baseball team got strong pitching and timely hitting and the Lions took out visiting McKendree, 5-2 in the opening game of the 2020 MIAA/GLVC Crossover at Warren Turner Field.
Southern (7-1) got a good start from Cole Woods as he went five innings, striking out two and allowing two hits and one earned run.
Corey Cowan threw three shutout innings and picked up the win to move to 1-0 on the season, striking out two in the process. Logan VanWey struck out hte side in the ninth to pick up save No. 3.
Brad Willis had a pair of RBIs and a double, while Jordan Fitzpatrick had a pair of hits. Henry Kusiak had a home run, while Troy Gagan, Matt Miller and Dexter Swims had a hit each.
McKendree (0-1) had three players with a hit each, led by Austin Francis who drove in a run and scored once.
The Lions got on the board first when Kusiak hit his first home run of the season in the third. McKendree tied it up in the fourth, but Willis doubled home Swims in the fifth to put the Lions up 2-1.
McKendree tied it again in the sixth, but the Lions answered with three runs of their own in the bottom half of the inning. Gagan scored on a wild pitch and Miller drove home Kinder with the second run of the inning on a single through the right side. Willis then walked withthe bases loaded, scoring Miller for the final tally of the sixth.
The Lions will be back in action today when Southern plays host to Missouri-St. Louis at 1 pm.
