EDMOND, Okla. - The Missouri South-ern State University Softball team opened the 2020 campaign during the Edmond Regional Festival I in Oklahoma on Saturday. The Lions came away with a five-inning run-rule win and lost in the second.
Missouri Southern 14, East Central 0 (5 inn.)
The Lions opened the season with a 14-0 five-inning run rule shut out over East Central.
The Tigers opened up the game with a one-out single, and the runner advanced to third before starting pitcher Abby Atkin used her defense to get out of the threat.
Southern then went on the offensive as Elizabeth Windsor nailed a ground-rule double to left center field for the opening hit of the campaign. Makaila Leonhart hit a single to centerfield to score Windsor for the first run.
The Lions continued apply pressure with a Josie Tofpi walk and Kristen Wade loaded the bases with a single. Haleigh Scott singled to right field to make the score 2-0 before Emily Harris and Lynnlee Parrott both drew RBI walks to push the score to 4-0.
Harris earned her second RBI of the game in the third inning with a double to centerfield before Windsor singled to scratch two unearned runs across the plate. Wade followed that up with a three-run triple and scored on a throwing error to add to the unearned run tally. They were not done as Erika Lutgen crushed a two-run homer to left field. In the inning the Lions posted eight runs on six hits and two errors to push the lead up to 12-0.
Windsor earned her third hit of the game and second RBI before Tofpi earned an RBI on a sacrifice fly.
Atkin earned the first win of the season by tossing the complete game shutout. She allowed just two hits and no walks while striking out two of the 16 batters she faced.
Offensively, Southern complied 13 hits and six walks while just having three strikeouts.

Missouri Southern only allowed one earned run in the second game, however, two passed balls and three defensive errors doomed them.
The second batter of the was Leonhart sent a home run over the left field wall to give the Lions a 1-0 lead over the Savage Storm.
Both teams were scoreless until the bottom of the fourth inning where SEOKSU capitalized on a fielding error and two hits to score two runs and take a lead headed into the fifth inning. The Savage Storm then added two more unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth to make the score 4-1. A passed ball in the bottom of the sixth inning allowed them to cap off the game with the win.
Mikaela Cox was tabbed with the loss as she faced 14 batters, allowed two hist and two runn with three strikeouts. Atkin came in and pitched in relief where she allowed two hits, and two unearned runs over two innings of work. Natalie Hamm, pitched the final inning and allowed one unearned run and a walk.
The Lions, 1-1 on the season, are scheduled to continue the weekend with tough teams tomorrow as they take on No. 15 Cameron at 10:00 a.m. and Oklahoma Christian, who is receiving votes in the NFCA Preseason poll at 2:00 pm.
