The 17th-ranked Missouri Southern baseball team will play host to Southwest Minnesota State this weekend as the two teams will hook up for a pair of games on Saturday and one game on Sunday.
Saturday's games are slated to begin at 1 pm, while Sunday's game will begin at noon. Games will be played at Warren Turner Field on the campus of MSSU and Live Stats as well as free live-streaming video will be available via the coverage link above.
The Lions (10-1) are coming into the series on a roll as Southern has won eight games in a row, including a four-game sweep of the University of Mary two weeks ago and all four games in the MIAA/GLVC Crossover this past weekend.
The Lions took out No. 27 St. Cloud State 13-1 in the Crossover, as well as defeating Washburn, Missouri-St. Louis and McKendree.
Southern leads the MIAA in walks (batters), ERA, hits allowed per nine innings, home runs per game, on base percentage, sacrifice flies, stolen bases, strikeout to walk ratio, strikeout per nine innings and WHIP. The Lions are third nationally in stolen bases, having gone 36-of-41 this season. Southern also ranks third nationally in WHIP, foiurth in strikeouts per nine, fifth in hits allowed per nine and fifth in walks.
Zach Parish has won back-to-back MIAA Pitcher of the Week awards after throwing a complete-game three-hitter against Missouri-St. Louis where he struck out 14 batters in five innings. The senior lefty has 328 career strikeouts (at NSU and MSSU), which is 22 from breaking the MIAA career strikeout record that has stood for more than 40 years. Parish and the Lions' pitching staff were impressive this weekend carding a 0.56 ERA and striking out 41 batters, while walking just five. Parish was also named to the All-Tournament Team for his efforts.
Also named to the All-Tournament team were Zac Shoemaker, Corey Cowan, and Troy Gagan. Shoemaker struck out 17 batters as he went all seven innings against St. Cloud State.
Gagan ranks sixth nationally in runs scored and is second in the MIAA, while ranking 14th nationally in sacrifice flies. Logan VanWey ranks second nationally and leads the MIAA in saves with four, while Parish and Shoemaker rank third and fourth nationally (second and third in MIAA) in strikeouts. Parish and Shoemaker both lead the MIAA and rank second nationally in wins as both are 3-0 on the season. Brad Willis is 15th nationally and second in the MIAA in walks.
SMSU will be playing its first game of the season and the Mustangs were picked to finish 12th in the Northern Sun preseason poll. SMSU returns 22 players from last year's team.
The two teams have played only once before with the Lions picking up an 11-1 win in the 1986 NAIA Tournament.
