Topeka, Kan. - Once down 19 points in the first half, the 19th-ranked Missouri Southern men's basketball team put on a furious comeback and got a huge win in Topeka, defeating Washburn 91-87 inside Lee Arena.
Southern (17-4, 10-2 MIAA) was led by a season-high 40 points from Cam Martin as he added nine rebounds and three blocks, going 15-of-23 from the field and 10-of-13 from the free throw line. Elyjah Clark scored 16 points and had eight rebounds, while Kinzer Lambert had 13 points and Winston Dessesow scored 11.
Clark's 16 points moved him all the way to No. 5 on the MSSU all-time scoring list, passing Skyler Bowlin and Marquis Addison in the process. Clark now has 1,675 points in his career. Martin's 40 points moves him to No. 15 on the list, right behind his teammate Lambert with 1,188 points in his two-year career. Lambert's career total of 1,266 points puts him just six points from passing Russell Bland for 13th all-time.
Washburn (12-9, 7-5 MIAA) was led in scoring by Tyler Geiman and Drew Maschoff who both had 20 points.
The Ichabods got out to an 11-4 start after a free throw with 13:50 to go, and the lead was 23-8 after a three-pointer with ten minutes left. A jumper from Martin got the Lions within 11 (32-21) with 5:49 to go in the half, but the Ichabods built a double-digit lead and a dunk from Bundy with 29 seconds to go in the half made the score 47-34, Washburn.
Southern started the second half on a 14-6 run and got within five (53-48) after a jumper from Martin with 15:09 left, while a jumper from Martin with 14:20 to go got the Lions within three (53-50). A pair of freebies from Dessesow with 13:11 to go cut the lead to just one (53-52), while a three from Clark with 12:44 to go put the Lions up 55-53.
A pair of free throws from Clark with 11:28 left put the Lions up 59-53, while a layup from Clark the next trip down made the score 61-55. Martin scored his 30th point of the night and the ensuing free throw put the Lions up 68-63 with eight minutes to go.
A three from Lambert with four minutes to go gave the Lions a 75-66 lead, while a three-point play from Lambert with 2:41 left gave the Lions an 80-71 lead. A pair of freebies from Parker Jennings gave the Lions an 84-77 lead with 1:21 to go, and Southern would go on to hold off the Ichabods with clutch late free throws.
Southern shot 55 percent in the field and 59 percent in the second half. The Lions shot 43 percent from the three point line (67 percent in the second half), while making 23-of-26 from the charity stripe in the game, including 21-of-22 in the second half. The Lions had a 46-32 advantage in the paint.
Southern will be back in action on Saturday as the Lions travel to Emporia State. Tip off is slated for 3:30 pm.
