MSSU baseball sweeps doubleheader from Southwest Minnesota

(From MSSU Lions Athletic News)

The No. 17 ranked Missouri Southern baseball team swept a pair of games from visiting Southwest Minnesota today, winning 9-2 in game one and 15-5 in game two at Warren Turner Field.

The Lions (12-1) got another stellar game from Zach Parish as the lefty moved to 4-0 on the season after going six innings, striking out 12 and allowing zero earned runs.

Corey Cowan struck out a batter in two-thirds of an inning and Jeremiah Kennedy got the final out. With his 12 strikeouts, Parish has 340 on his career and is just nine away from tying the MIAA career record.

Jordan Fitzpatrick had a home run and drove in three runs. Joe Kinder, Henry Kusiak and Matt Miller had back-to-back-to-back home runs in the game, with Kinder driving in two. Brad Willis, Tommy Stevenson, Troy Gagan, Dexter Swims and Cole McBride all added runs in the game.

Game two saw Zac Shoemaker start and go four innings and struck out three settling for the no-decision. Zach Zeller threw an inning and two thirds to pick up the win and move to 2-0, while Cole Woods threw the final inning and a third.

Fitzpatrick went 3-for-3 in the game with a pair of runs and an RBI, while Swims had three RBIs and a pair of runs scored with a triple. Willis and Gagan drove in a pair, as well as Calem Nutting and Marco Navarro.

The Lions were up 5-1 after two innings, but the Mustangs (0-2) fought back and scored one run in the fourth and three runs in the fifth to tie it up. Southern picked up a pair of runs in the fifth and the sixth and put the game away, invoking the run-rule with six runs in the seventh.

The two teams will finish up the three-game series tomorrow morning with a 9 am start. The game time has been moved up from the original noon start to try and beat incoming weather.
