MSSU women ride strong second half to 67-61 win over Northwest Missouri

The Missouri Southern women's basketball team rode a six-point halftime lead and defeated the visiting Northwest Missouri State Bearcats, 67-61 inside the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center tonight.

Southern (8-14, 5-9 MIAA) was led by 21 points from Destiny Cozart as she went 4-of-9 from long-range and added five rebounds, four steals and an assist. Madi Stokes scored 13 points and added ten rebounds, while Kaiulani Jones had 11 points and four assists. Zoe Campbell had seven points and nine boards.

Northwest (11-12, 6-8 MIAA) was led by 19 points and six rebounds. Kylie Coleman scored 15 and added six boards.








A layup from Stokes with 7:38 left in the first quarter gave the Lions a 6-3 lead, and a three from Jones with 6:44 on the clock made the score 9-6, Southern. A layup from Cozart with 3:27 to go pushed the Lions' lead to 16-11, but Northwest would tie the score at 16 with 2:29 left. A three from Megan Jackson with 14 seconds left gave the Lions a 21-19 lead after one.

A three from Cozart two minutes into the second quarter pushed the Southern lead to 24-19, while a layup from Cozart the next trip down made it 26-19. Southern led 30-24 after a pair of free throws from Jordan Schoenberger with 2:51 left and a layup from Stokes as time was expiring gave the Lions a 32-26 lead at the break.

The two teams traded baskets in the third before a 6-1 run, capped by a three from Cozart gave the Lions a 42-36 lead with 4:33 left. A bucket from Stokes with just under a minute gave the Lions a 49-43 lead, which proved to be the final tally of the quarter.

After Northwest got a three to get within one (49-48) with 8:50 remaining, Southern went on an 8-0 run to lead 57-48 with seven minutes to go, forcing a Northwest timeout. A three from Cozart with 3:54 on the clock gave the Lions a 64-55 lead, but Northwest made two three's late to get within three (64-61) with 29 seconds on the clock. The Lions made their free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

Southern shot 46 percent from the field in the game, while out rebounding Northwest 35-31.

Southern will be back in action this Saturday as the Lions play host to Missouri Western. Tip off is slated for 1:30 pm.
