(From MSSU Lions Athletic News)

Missouri Southern State University Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Bryan Schiding has been named the 2020 Division II National Men's Head Coach of the Year, announced Friday afternoon by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

Schiding, in his 11th year at Southern, is in his seventh year as the head coach of the Men and the fifth as the Director of Cross Country and Track and Field.

This year, he helped guide the Lions to their third Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) championship after being picked to finish fifth in the MIAA Preseason Coaches' Poll.

They finished with five individual champions and scored 142 points, 26 points ahead of second place Pittsburg State, who finished second. The Lions, who finished the season ranked No. 8, were ranked at No. 6 earlier this year, the highest Southern has ever been ranked for the indoor portion of the schedule.

"This is a tremendous honor, which is a direct correlation to the dedication and devotion of our student-athletes and my coaching staff," said Schiding after hearing of the honor. "I feel we have one of the best coaching staffs in the NCAA, and this is certainly indicative of the countless hours that we all put in, together."

Schiding was named Central Region Men's Coach of the Year. Under Schiding's guidance, the team had 19 NCAA provisional qualifiers, with three being automatic qualifiers, plus one relay team. His athletes also broke six school records this season. The Lions were ranked No. 1 in the Central Region with nine student-athletes from the men's side who were scheduled to compete in the NCAA Division II National Championships in six events.

Schiding and his staff, composed of Assistant Coach Brian Allen, who coaches throwing events, Assistant Coach Jaime Burnham, who coaches distance, and Assistant Coach Jason Francis, who coaches sprints, hurdles and combined events, were named the MIAA Men's Coaching Staff of the Year earlier this month. Schiding was named the Central Region Coach of the Year, while Rajindra Campbell was the Central Region Field Athlete of the Year.

This is the first time that a coach from Missouri Southern has earned the USTFCCCA National Coach of the Year honors.

Missouri Department of Conservation to temporarily waive fishing permits

(From the Missouri Department of Conservation)

The Missouri Department of Conservation (MDC) and the Missouri Conservation Commission announce they are temporarily waiving permit requirements for sport fishing and daily trout tags for Missouri residents and nonresidents whose fishing privileges are not otherwise suspended.

The waiver of needing a permit or trout tag to fish will run from Friday, March 27, through April 15.

MDC will reassess the situation at that point. All season dates, methods, and limits will continue to apply and be enforced.

“The current public-health emergency caused by the coronavirus (COVID-19) has many Missourians and others looking for safe ways to get outside in nature,” said MDC Director Sara Parker Pauley.

“Missouri’s rivers and streams offer high quality fishing as a way for people to connect with nature while still complying with all health and safety recommendations. Fishing is also a great way to get some much needed physical and mental health benefits during this stressful time.”
Conservation makes Missouri a great place to fish and Missouri has more than a million acres of surface water with most of it providing great fishing. More than 200 different fish species are found in Missouri, with more than 20 of them being game fish for the state's more than 1.1 million anglers. Get more info on Missouri fishing at huntfish.mdc.mo.gov/fishing

Pauley added that it is still critical for everyone to continue to heed all recommendations for hand washing, social distancing, and other public-health measures while fishing and during other outdoor activities, including maintaining at least six feet of distance between all individuals who are not family members.

St. Louis Cardinals president answers fan questions about upcoming season

(From the St. Louis Cardinals)

This week, Major League Baseball announced that the opening of the 2020 season will be delayed due to the CDC's latest guidelines, which restrict events of more than 50 people for a matter of weeks. We are supportive of this decision as the health and safety of our fans, players, and staff is our highest priority. The situation is fluid. It evolves by the hour, and unfortunately we don't have a date we can circle on the calendar for Opening Day yet.

What we do know is that MLB will continue to share updates regarding plans for the 2020 schedule in the days and weeks ahead, and we will share news as it becomes available, along with news specific to Busch Stadium and other events.

MLB has a variety of contingency plans, and we will remain flexible with the hope of resuming normal operations as soon as possible. When the season does begin, MLB will be committed to playing as many games as possible.

Below, is a list of topics we anticipate our fans have questions about, along with what we know at this time.

Ticketing Questions: We are working through our approach to handling ticket issues, and we will communicate details to fans soon. We appreciate your patience and understanding in the meantime.

The MLB London Series: MLB continues to monitor the situation, but has not made a decision to delay or cancel the event at this time.

Status of Major and Minor League Players: Most of our major league players have returned home, with a few remaining in camp who live nearby. Our minor league players were sent home after spring training operations were suspended on Friday. Before players left, they were provided at-home training information as well as guidelines about prevention, good hygiene, and the latest travel recommendations. We will communicate with them on a regular basis to ensure their health and wellness during this time. Also, we will honor our daily allowance for minor league players.

Coronavirus Task Force: We have established an internal task force to address all aspects of this situation and its impact on the organization, our fans and the community.

Front Office Staffing: Starting this week, the St. Louis Cardinals have implemented a telework policy—requiring all front office employees to work from home, with the exception of those employees whose responsibilities require them to be present at the stadium.

Seasonal Staff: This is an important issue impacting not only the St. Louis Cardinals, but all professional sports teams. Cancelled games can hurt game day and seasonal staff particularly hard, and we are concerned about them. Yesterday, MLB announced that each of the 30 teams will be contributing $1 million into a fund that will help this group of employees. More details will follow on how the Cardinals will be administering this fund, and how others might be able to contribute to it as well.

Coronavirus Prevention Guidelines: We hope our fans stay educated on how to prevent exposure and transmission of the Coronavirus. Here is a helpful link from the CDC's website about ways to protect yourself.

See also this helpful article from MLB.com, What fans need to know about the Coronavirus.

In closing, we want to thank you for your ongoing support of our team and our city as we work through this unprecedented situation. We can't wait for the moment we are back at Busch Stadium together.

Stay safe, and we will be in touch.

Sincerely,

Bill DeWitt III
President, St. Louis Cardinals

Taggart, a 6-5 native of Eureka, Mo., comes to Southern after transferring from Southern Illinois - Carbondale.

Taggart originally signed with the Salukis to play both basketball and football, but redshirted and will have a full four years of eligibility with the Lions.

Taggart was a decorated recruit coming out of Eureka High School and was ranked as the No. 2 tight end in the state. But his talents on the basketball court were equally as impressive. Taggart scored over 1,200 points in his career and is second on the all-time scoring list at EHS. He averaged 21 points per game his senior year and finished as the school's all-time leading three-point shooter.

On the football field, Taggart was a three-year letter winner and was a three-time All-Conference and All-District selection, while picking up All-Metro honors in 2018. He helped the Wildcats to three District Championships and a spot in the Missouri State Semifinals in 2017.

Taggart is the son of Jeff and Jane Taggart and plans to major in health promotion at Southern.

"I am excited to add Avery to our recruiting class," Boschee said. "He was a dominant high school player in St. Louis that has great size and versatility from the guard spot. He will fit into the way we like to play with his ability to shoot the ball and handle it."

More information will be forthcoming after guidance from the NCAA tomorrow. Below is the official statement from NCAA President Mark Emmert.

Statement from NCAA President Mark Emmert:

The NCAA continues to assess the impact of COVID-19 in consultation with public health officials and our COVID-19 advisory panel.

Based on their advice and my discussions with the NCAA Board of Governors, I have made the decision to conduct our upcoming championship events, including the Division I men's and women's basketball tournaments, with only essential staff and limited family attendance.

While I understand how disappointing this is for all fans of our sports, my decision is based on the current understanding of how COVID-19 is progressing in the United States.

This decision is in the best interest of public health, including that of coaches, administrators, fans and, most importantly, our student-athletes. We recognize the opportunity to compete in an NCAA national championship is an experience of a lifetime for the students and their families.

Today, we will move forward and conduct championships consistent with the current information and will continue to monitor and make adjustments as needed.
