MSSU women finish second at MIAA Track and Field Championship

PITTSBURG, Kan.-The No. 2 ranked Missouri Southern State University Women's Track and Field Team finished second in the 2020 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association Indoor Track and Field Championship on Sunday (Mar. 1).

Southern scored 130.5 team points as they captured two event wins and 13 All-MIAA honors during the three-day championship.

Payton Roberts opened Sunday's action with a win in the shot put. Roberts set a new meet and program record with an automatic qualifying throw of 16.13 meters (52-11.00). The mark is now the No. 1 mark in the NCAA.

Jennifer Okeke earned All-MIAA status by posting a provisional mark in the triple jump with a leap of 11.78 meters (38-07.75)








Kelie Henderson finished second and earned All-MIAA honors in the mile by finishing in 5:04.31.

Kiara Smith won the 60-meter hurdles with a provisional mark of 8.55 and teammate Cornesia Calhoun-White was right behind her in second with a provisional mark of 8.56. Both earned All-MIAA honors.

Jasmine Deckard finished the 60-meter dash in 7.51 for a provisional mark and All-MIAA honors as she finished in second. She added an automatic qualifying time of 23.78 in the 200-meter dash which broke her own school record and was good enough for second-place and All-MIAA honors.

Deckard was joined by Elizabeth Adeoye, Chardae Overstreet and LaNea Wallace for a second place finish and All-MIAA honors in the 4x400 relay as the quad finished in a provisional qualifying mark of 3:46.83.

Below are MSSU's complete results. The Lions will now turn their attention to the national stage as they travel to Birmingham, Ala. For the NCAA Division II National Indoor Track and Field Championships on March 13 and 14. The NCAA will announce which Lions will compete in the National Championships this week.
