MSSU softball at home this weekend against Newman, Central Oklahoma

The Missouri Southern State University Softball team returns to the friendly confines of the Pat Lipira Softball Complex on Friday and Saturday for Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) doubleheaders on Friday (Mar. 13) and Saturday (Mar. 14).

The Lions, who are 11-9 on the season and 1-3 in the MIAA, will take on the Newman Jets with games set for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Friday before taking on the University of Central Oklahoma Bronchos at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Last time Out

The Lions enter the weekend and look to get back in the win column. The Lions opened conference play with an 8-5 come-from-behind eight-inning win over Washburn last Friday before falling to the Ichabods (9-3) and falling to Emporia (9-1 and 4-2).








On the weekend, Haleigh Scott was spot on. She finished the weekend with a .455 batting average (5-of-11) during the four games. She had one run and four RBI while also drew two walks.

Scouting The Opposition

Newman enters the weekend with a 9-16 overall record and a 1-3 in their first season competing in the MIAA. Last weekend they were swept by No. 11 Rogers State (17-1 and 5-0) and split with Northeastern State (0-11 and 4-3) with the final game being their first ever MIAA win. The Jets will enter Friday's games with just one day of rest as they hosted Sterling College on Wednesday.

The University of Central Oklahoma enters the weekend with a 13-12 overall record and a 3-1 MIAA mark. The Bronchos opened up league action with a 2-3 loss to Northeastern State before winning the second game, 3-2. On Saturday, UCO swept No. 11 Rogers State 5-1 and 5-0.

Brighton Gilbert is the top batter for a deep Broncho team. She has a .455 batting average with 40 hits in 88 at bats including two doubles, two triples and a home run. She has six RBI but has scored 20 runs.

Kylee Lynch and Corrina Rivas are the top pitchers for UCO. Lynch has a 6-4 record in the circle during her 15 games, nine starts, and 70.2 innings pitched with a 1.78 ERA while Rivas has a 6-6 record with a 2.15 ERA. She has appeared in 15 games, started 11, and pitched 78 innings.

UCO holds a 16-1 overall series record since the 2011 season with Southern's win coming in 2013 (11-3).

Weather Outlook

Friday be cloudy with a high near 53 degrees with winds gusting from 10-20 miles per hour. Friday night and Saturday will see periods of rain and there is a slight possibility that Saturday's games may be pushed back to Sunday. Stick to www.mssulions.com for updates.

On Deck

The Lions will have night straight games on the road with all games being non-conference games. The Lions travel to McKendree University on Wednesday (Mar. 18) for a doubleheader before participating in the Hy-Vee Classic hosted by Missouri Western in St. Joseph, Mo. from Mar. 20-Mar. 22.
