Haleigh Scott three-run homer closes out MSSU softball sweep of Missouri S&T

Twenty four hits on the offensive side backed up by stellar pitching performances propelled the Missouri Southern State University Lions Softball team to a sweep of the Missouri S&T Miners, 7-0 and 14-4, on Sunday.

The Lions, who are on a four-game winning streak, head into Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association action with a 10-6 overall record. The Miners are now 3-10 on the season.

In the first game, the Lions scored early as Elizabeth Windsor doubled to left field scoring Tori Frazier in the bottom of the third inning. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Southern capitalized on six hits including a three-run blast to left center from Erika Lutgen and six runs to seal the win.





Offensively, the Lions had 11 hits including three extra base hits. Frazier and Windsor each went 2-for-3 in the game. Abby Atkin was tabbed as the winner as she tossed the complete game. She surrendered six hits and one walk but had four strikeouts.

In the second game, a five-inning mercy rule walk-off win for the Lions, Southern scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning. The Lions then scored one in the fourth and seven in the bottom of the fifth. The closing salvo was a three-run blast to left center by Haleigh Scott.

In the game, Southern had 13 hits as four players had two hits, including a 2-for-4 performance by Scott that included four RBI.

Atkin earned her second win of the day by pitching 2.1 innings, allowing just four runs on five hits and a walk. Mikaela Cox came in and closed the game with by pitching 2.2 innings of shutout ball. She had one strikeout and allowed one walk and one hit.

On the weekend that saw MSSU finish 4-1, Josie Tofpi was the top hitter as she hit .471 (8-of-17) including four extra base hits, three doubles and a triple. She had nine RBI and scored six runs. She tallied one stolen base and was a perfect 23-of-23 on defensive opportunities.

Atkin finished the weekend with a 3-0 record. She pitched 16.1 innings and finished with a 2.14 ERA. She surrendered six runs, five earned, on 16 hits and six walks while tallying four strikeouts.
Southern returns to the diamond on Friday when they travel to Topeka to open MIAA action at Washburn.
