MSSU men capture first place at MIAA Championship

PITTSBURG, Kan.-The No. 7 Missouri Southern State University Men's Track and Field Team captured the 2020 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association Indoor Track and Field Championship on Sunday (Mar. 1).

Southern, which won its third title (2007 & 2004) in program history, scored 142 points for a resounding 26-point win.

Senior Rajindra Campbell opened the day in record-shattering fashion as he had a throw of 20.07 meters (65-10.25) to win the shot put title and earn All-MIAA status. The win doubled as a new MIAA meet record as well as a new Southern record in the event. The automatic qualifying mark moves Campbell into the No. 1 spot in the NCAA rankings. Josh Fulmer's provisional mark throw of 16.25 meters (53-03.75) added an additional point for the Lions.

Junior Dean Howard scored five team points in the pole vault as he cleared 5.07 meters (16-07.50) for a provisional mark and fourth place.








Southern scored 12 points in the triple jump with Josh Norville, Adrain Broadus and Brendan Watkins finishing fourth, fifth and sixth, respectively.

On the track, Ryan Riddle and Gidieon Kimutai earned All-MIAA status as they finished first and third in the mile. Riddle set a new MIAA and MSSU record with a provisional qualifying mark of 4:08.13. Kimutai's mark of 4:10.11 was also a provisional.

Desmond Hall scored eight points while posting a provisional mark of 8.07 to earn All-MIAA honors and finish in second in the 60-meter hurdles. Cameron Linville had a provisional mark of 6.84 by finishing fourth in the 60-meter dash for five points.

Jon Johnson posted a time of 1:10.96 to earn All-MIAA honors by finishing second in the 600-yard run. Gabe McClain also scored an All-MIAA honor and earned eight team points by finishing in second in the 800-meter run in 1:53.57.

In the 3,000-meter run, Gidieon Kimutai set a new meet record by winning the race in 8.15.79, the third best time Southern history. He joined Ryan Riddle with All-MIAA honors as Riddle finished in third with a time of 8:24.51. The two combined for 16 team points.

The squad capped off the win with a second-place finish by the 4x400-meter relay team of Jon Johnson, Brieon Randle, Gabe McClain and Elliot Rule earning All-MIAA status by finishing second in a time of 3:16.81.

In all, the Lions earned 11 individual and two relay All-MIAA honors while winning five individual events.

Below are MSSU's complete results. The Lions will now turn their attention to the national stage as they travel to Birmingham, Ala. For the NCAA Division II National Indoor Track and Field Championships on March 13 and 14. The NCAA will announce which Lions will compete in the National Championships this week.
