MSSU baseball defeats Washburn 9-5

(From MSSU Lions Athletic News)

The No. 25 Missouri Southern baseball team picked up eight runs over the fourth, fifth and sixth innings as the Lions hammered out a 9-5 win over Washburn at Warren Turner Field.

Southern (15-4, 2-3 MIAA) got a stellar start from Zac Shoemaker as he went eight innings, striking out nine and walking just one to move to 4-1 on the season. His nine K's give him 200 on his career at Missouri Southern, becoming the sixth Lion pitcher to match that feat.

Ethan Paschke threw a third of an inning, while Logan VanWey struck out the only two batters he faced to pick up save number six.

Clay Milas and Dexter Swims both had home runs in the game as Milas went 2-for-5 with a pair of runs, while Swims went 3-for-5 with three runs and an RBI. Tommy Stevenson went 3-for-3 with three RBIs and two walks, while Henry Kusiak was 3-for-4 with a pair of runs and RBIs. Jordan Fitzpatrick, Troy Gagan and Joe Kinder had a hit each, while Matt Miller had two hits and two runs scored to go with an RBI.

Washburn (11-10, 3-2 MIAA) got three hits from Parker Dunn.

Swims started things off for the Lions with a homer in the second inning, but Washburn scored three runs in the fourth to go up 3-1 heading to the bottom of the fourth.

Southern answered right back with a homer from Milas to get the Lions within a run at 3-2. Stevenson then singled home Swims, and Fitzpatrick knocked home Kusiak to give the Lions a 4-3 lead after four.

Miller doubled home Milas in the fifth and Kusiak had an RBI single to score Swims to make it 6-3. Sevenson then doubled down the right field line to score Kusiak and Miller to make it 8-3.

Washburn picked up a run in the sixth, but Kusiak tripled down the right field line to score Miller to make it 9-4. The Ichabods picked pu another run in the ninth, but VanWey came in to seal the win with a pair of strikeouts.

The two teams will be back in action tomorrow afternoon with a 1 pm first pitch from Turner Field.
