MSSU softball to open MIAA action at Washburn, Emporia State

Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) action is set to start for the Missouri Southern State University Softball team this weekend when the Lions travel to Washburn University and Emporia State University for doubleheaders on Friday (Mar. 6) and Saturday (Mar. 7).

The Lions, who are 10-6 on the season, will take on the Ichabods with games set for 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Friday before parlaying with the Hornets at 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. on Saturday.

Last time Out

The Lions enter the weekend on a four-game winning streak after dropping the opening game of the Teri (Matis) Zenner Tournament to Missouri Western (9-3). The Lions defeated Northern State (9-2 & 3-1) and Missouri S&T (7-0 & 14-4). Northern State was undefeated until meeting Southern on Saturday.

On the weekend, Josie Tofpi was the top hitter as she hit .471 (8-of-17) including four extra base hits, three doubles and a triple. She had nine RBIs and scored six runs. She tallied one stolen base and was a perfect 23-of-23 on defensive opportunities.








Atkin finished the weekend with a 3-0 record. She pitched 16.1 innings and finished with a 2.14 ERA. She surrendered six runs, five earned, on 16 hits and six walks while tallying four strikeouts.

Scouting The Opposition

Washburn enters the weekend with a 12-11 overall record including a 4-1 record this past weekend in their home tournament. The Ichabods lead the all-time series 44-43 and have won four of the last five meetings after splitting a doubleheader last season, 3-0 and 3-4, in Topeka.

Winter Henry is the top hitter for the Ichabods with a .382 batting average in 23 games. She has two home runs and 13 RBIs. The top pitcher for Washburn is Raegen Hamm, who is 9-4 on the season with a 1.89 ERA. She has 98 strikeouts while surrendering just 85 hits and 37 base on balls.

Emporia State enters the weekend with a 12-7 overall record including a 4-2 record this past weekend at the Washburn Invitational. The Lions lead the all-time series 41-38, with their last win coming on Mar. 10, 2018, in Joplin with a 6-2 victory.

The Hornets' top hitter is Hannah Steeby who has a .421 batting average with 24 hits in 19 games. She has a MIAA-leading seven home runs and 23 RBIs to her credit. In the circle, Kerringan Dixon has a 5-0 record with a 3.13 ERA.

Weather Outlook

Weather in Topeka on Friday is forecasted to be sunny with a high of 58 degrees with winds topping out at 9 miles per hour. In Emporia on Saturday appears to be partly cloudy with a high of 66, however winds will be more prominent with gusts up to 23 miles per hour.

On Deck

The Lions return home next Friday (Mar. 13) and Saturday (Mar. 14) for MIAA doubleheaders with Newman University and the University of Central Oklahoma.
