MSSU women open MIAA Tournament play today against Washburn

The Missouri Southern State University Women's Basketball team is set to open the 2020 Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association Tournament on Wednesday when they take on Washburn.

Lions on the Prowl

MSSU enters Wednesday's contest with a 10-17 overall record and a 7-12 MIAA record. Chasidee Owens (14.0) and Destiny Cozart (14.6) are the leading scorers for the Lions while Campbell leads the team in rebounds per game (7.0) and blocks (60). The Lions enter the MIAA tournament as the No. 9 seed.










The Experienced Ichabod

The Washburn women's basketball team begins postseason play in the first round of the MIAA Tournament with a 17-11 overall recoard and are 11-8 in the MIAA. Tip-off at Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City is set for noon. The Ichabods are the No. 8 seed. Last season, Washburn was the No. 4 seed and won the quarterfinal over Emporia before falling to top-seeded Fort Hays State. The Ichabods have appeared in every MIAA tournament since they became elligiable in 1991. Washburn has a tournament record of 39-20 with nine tournament championships.

Ichabods have Depth

The Ichabods average 69.4 ppg and shoot 43.2 percentage from the floor. Washburn is third in the MIAA in three-point field goal percentage at 34.8 percent. Shelbe Piggie has 23 double-figure scoring games this season. Piggie averages 13.0 ppg and has the sixth-highest field goal percentage in the MIAA at 49.1 percent.

Hunter Bentley also averages 13.0 ppg. She leads the team with 7.1 rpg, 2.0 spg, and leads the conference with 34.8 minutes played per game.

Postseason Turnaround

With Northwest Missouri's loss on Thursday night, the Lions clinched a spot in the 2020 MIAA Basketball Tournament four the eighth straight year. The Lions are 1-7 in that span. They have made it to the tournament 18 of the last 19 years.

Last season, Southern was the No. 10 seed and fell to No. 7 seeded University of Oklahoma, 68-60, in the opening round. The Lions' last MIAA tournament win came back on Feb. 29, 2016 when they defeated Northeastern State, 73-55.

Seniors land on All-MIAA

Lion seniors Chasidee Owens and Destiny Cozart were named All-MIAA Honorable Mention by the conference on Tuesday afternoon.
