Cam Martin's record 54 points not enough as MSSU loses to Missouri Western 89-85

St. Joseph, Mo. -- Missouri Southern junior Cam Martin set the MSSU single-game scoring mark tonight with 54 points, but the No. 17 Lions were upset on the road, falling 89-85 at Missouri Western inside the MWSU Fieldhouse.

Southern (19-7, 12-5 MIAA) had 54 points and 12 rebounds from Martin as he went 17-of-27 from the field, 5-of-11 from the three-point line and 15-of-16 from the free throw line.

The 54 points tops the mark he had already tied with Carl Tyler of 49 as the previous single-game high. Martin added an assist and two blocks and went past his teammate Kinzer Lambert on the career scoring list into 14th place as he has 1,366 points in his two seasons at Southern, eclipsing Lambert's 1,354 points. Lambert had 13 points on the night, while Elyjah Clark scored ten.








Western (16-12, 12-5 MIAA) remains undefeated at home this season as the Griffons had a pair of 20-point games from Tyrell Carroll (23) and Tyus Millhollin (22).

A layup from Martin with 14:23 left in the first half gave the Lions a 10-8 lead early on and a pair of freebies from Martin with ten minutes to go in the half pushed the Lions' lead to 16-13. Southern led by five after a three from Lambert with 7:49 on the clock and after the Griffons had taken a 23-21 lead, a jumper from Reggie Tharp with five minutes to play in the half tied the game at 23.

A three-point play from Martin wth 1:51 left in the half put the Lions up 31-30, but Western closed the half on a 4-0 run and led 34-31 going into the break.

The two teams traded buckets early on in the second half, but with the Griffons leading 44-42 with 15:18 on the clock, Martin went to work. He scored a jumper to tie the score at 44 and then made four-straight three's to put the Lions up 56-47 as he went on a 14-3 run of his own.

The Southern lead was seven (58-51) with ten minutes to go, but Western quickly clawed back again and tied the game at 61 with eight minutes on the clock. The game was tied three more times (15 times in the game) before the Griffons went ahead 78-75 after a three from Carroll with 1:44 left on the clock. Western would hang on down the stretch, making clutch free throws.

The Lions will head back home for the first of the final two regular-season games as Southern plays host to Central Missouri on Wednesday evening. Tip off from the Leggett & Platt Center is slated for 7:30 pm.
