EDMOND, Okla.- The Missouri Southern State University Softball team fell in two games during the 2020 Edmond Regional Festival I in Oklahoma.
No. 15 Cameron 5, Missouri Southern 4
Southern opened the day with a narrow 5-4 loss to the No. 15 team in the NFCA Preseason Poll.
The Lions fired the opening salvo in the top of the first inning as Haleigh Scott hit a two-out, two-run double to left center for a 2-0 lead.
The Aggies didn't score until the bottom of the second as a bases loaded error cost the Lions a run. Cameron then tied the game at two in the bottom of the third inning on a double down the left field line.
Kaycee Hodgson led a counter with a triple to center field that scored Emilee Meyer. The boxing match continued into the bottom of the fourth inning as the Aggies pushed two runs across on a two-out double to make the score 4-3 in favor of Cameron. The lead increased to 5-3 after a solo homer in the bottom of the sixth.
Down to their final out, Southern battled back as Makaila Leonhart tripled before Josie Tofpi doubled to center field to make it a one run game. Despite pushing the final at bat to a 3-2 count, the Lions could not tie the game.
Leonhart was the top hitter as she had two hits and two runs scored in the game.
Mikaela Cox was tabbed with the loss as she pitched three innings and allowed three runs on five hits. Abby Atkin started the game and allowed two runs, one earned, on four hits and had a strikeout.

The second game started with quickly once again as Scott nailed a double to score Leonhart and Tofpi. They added an additional run on a fielder's choice for the early lead. After the bottom of the first inning,
The rest of the game was all Eagles as they scored 15 runs in the bottom of the first and five in the bottom of the fourth.
The Lions finished the first weekend with a 1-3 record. They will now turn their attention to the Alvy Early Memorial Classic Tournament hosted by the University of Arkansas at Monticello in Bentonville, Ark, where 20 of the top Division II Softball teams in the Region will come together to compete and honor the legacy of Coach Alvy Early. The Lions have four games scheduled for the weekend.
