Southern track and field teams fare well at first day of Gorilla Classic

(From MSSU Lions Athletic News)

The No. 4 ranked Missouri Southern State University Track and Field women's team and No. 6 ranked men's team performed well during the first day of the 5th Annual Indoor Gorilla Classic hosted by Pitt State in the Robert W. Plaster Center.

The Lions posted a meet win and record, an automatic qualifying mark and four provisional qualifying marks.

Josh Fulmer didn't improve his eighth-place mark in the NCAA ranking but his throw of 19.55 meters was a provisional qualifying mark.

Josh Norville set a new MSSU record as he won the long jump with an automatic qualifying mark of 7.71 meters. The mark, which is a new Gorilla Classic Meet record, is better than his 7.65-meter mark from last week as he still sits in second in the NCAA standings. Brendan Watkins posted a provisional mark of 7.17 meters in the event.

Megan Tramel cleared 3.62 meters in the open pole vault for a provisional mark, however, her best mark is still 6.67 meters (Jan. 24 at 2020 Northwest Open).

Kirsten Leisinger finished second in the women's weight throw as she had a provisional mark of 18.49 meters. The mark was better than her 18.25-meter mark she posted at the Crimson & Gold Invitational (Dec. 7, 2019). The new mark is No. 3 in MSSU rankings.
