TOPEKA, Kan.-An early start by the Missouri Southern Lions was nullified by a 16-0 run that spanned just over four minutes in the second and third quarters as the Washburn Ichabods gained some separation before getting a 68-48 win over Southern on Thursday night.
The Lions, who saw their two-game winning streak snapped, are now 7-13 overall and 4-8 in the MIAA. The Ichabods improved to 12-9 overall and 6-6 in the MIAA.]
Southern jumped out to an 11-4 lead before the Ichabods rattled it down. They tied the game up at 15 and 17. Despite a 19-17 lead, Washburn was able to take a 20-19 advantage after one quarter behind a three-pointer.
In the first quarter the Lions connected on 8-of-16 (50 percent) from the field including 3-of-6 from beyond the arch. Six different Lions scored in the quarter.
The second quarter started off just as quick as the first with the Ichabods jumping out to a 22-19 lead, however, Layne Skiles drained her second trey to tie the game at 22. The hot shooting hands then cooled off for both teams as 2:30 ticked off the cock before the Ichabods capitalized on a pair of free throws. With 6:50 showing in the first half, Destiny Cozart gave Southern the lead with her second three-pointer.
With two minutes remaining in the first half, the Icabods, who were 9-of-10 from the free throw line, cashed in and took a lead 32-31.
The second half started with Washburn pushing their run to 16-0 before a Skiles lay-up broke the drought. The Lions would only get as close as seven points.
Destiny Cozart was the top scorer for the Lions as she connected on 6-of-14 from the field, 5-of-12 from beyond the arch for 17 points.
Zoe Campbell was credited with two more steals to increase her MSSU-single season record to 53. Her career total is now 104, just five away from tying MSSU's career record of 109, held by Caryn Schumaker (1987-1991).
The Lions return to action on Saturday when they travel to Emporia State for an MIAA tilt. The game is set to tip off at 3:00 p.m.
