MSSU men lose to Northwest Missouri on buzzer beater

Maryville, Mo. -- The 17th-ranked Missouri Southern men's basketball team led with a minute to go in the game, but a step-back jumper from No. 1 ranked Northwest Missouri's Trevor Hudgins as time expired lifted the Bearcats over the Lions 77-76 tonight inside Bearcat Arena.

Southern (19-6, 12-4 MIAA) got another big game from Cam Martin as he scored 33 points and pulled down 11 rebounds on the night.

Kinzer Lambert scored 18 points and had eight rebounds, going 6-for-8 from the field, 3-for-5 from long range and 3-for-3 from the free throw line. Parker Jennings had 13 points and seven assists, while Elyjah Clark scored nine points and had five boards.








Northwest Missouri (25-1, 15-1 MIAA) had five players in double-figures, led by 19 points each from Ryan Hawkins and Hudgins.

A three from Lambert with 13:52 left in the first half lifted the Lions to a 11-6 lead early on and a dunk from Martin with 9:12 left put the Lions' leads at seven (25-18).

The Bearcats climbed ahead at the seven-minute mark on a three from Wes Dreamer and led for the rest of the half. A layup from Hudgins as time expired made the score 39-33, Northwest at the break.

Northwest led by seven (47-40) after a three with just under 16 to go, but the Lions fought back and went on a 10-4 run to tie it after a three-point play from Lambert with 12 minutes to go. A three from Lambert the next trip down gave Southern a 55-53 lead and a three from Jennings with 11 minutes to go made the score 58-56, Lions.

The two teams traded buckets for most of the second half with neither team leading by more than three points until a three from Clark with 1:18 to go gave the Lions a 76-72 lead.

Northwest, however, got a three from Hudgins with 50 seconds to get within one and the Bearcats needed to foul to get the ball back. Northwest fouled three times before the Lions went to the line and the subsequent free throw was no good. Northwest got the rebound, outlet the pass to Hudgins who made the game-winner as time expired.

Southern shot 61 percent from the field in the second half and 55 percent from the field in the game. The Lions made 46 percent of their three pointersand out rebounded Northwest 35-21. Southern held a 36-22 advantage in the paint and a 12-8 lead in second-chance points. The game featured 19 lead changes with the game being tied for more than six minutes.

The Lions will now re-group and head to St. Joseph as Southern will take on Missouri Western on Saturday. Tip off is slated for 7:30 pm.
