MSSU women to play at Emporia State

The Missouri Southern State University Women's Basketball hits the road on Saturday to take on the Emporia State University Hornets on Saturday.

Lions on the Prowl

MSSU enters Saturday's contest with a 7-13 overall record and an 6-7 MIAA record. Southern will look to move their winning streak up to two games after earning a hard fought 59-50 win over Northeastern State on Wednesday night.

Destiny Cozart (13.9), Chasidee Owens (14.7) and Zoe Campbell (10.2) pace the Lions as the three players who average double digit scoring in the 20 games this season. Campbell leads the team in rebounds per game (7.7) and blocks (53).










Fighting Off the Sting

Emporia State holds a 56-25 advantage over the Lions in the series, back-to-back wins in the 2018-19 season. Saturday's tilt is the only scheduled meeting this season between these two teams that have a history dating back to Jan. 22 1977.

The longest winning streak for the Lady Hornets came back at the beginning of the series as they rattled off 10 straight wins from Jan. 22, 1977 thru Jan. 17, 1981.

The Lions longest winning streak came in the early to mid 90s as they strung together eight wins between Jan. 11, 1992 and Feb. 24, 1996.The Lion's last win over Emporia State came on Jan. 20 2018 when they downed the Hornets 62-55 in Joplin. Dating back to 2000, ESU holds a 31-7 advantage over MSSU.

About the Lady Hornets

Emporia State is 16-5, 9-3 in the MIAA and receiving votes in the WBCA National Poll. They lead the league in steals, turnover margin, and three-point field goals made. They are fresh off a 68-52 win over Pitt State.

Tre'Zure Jobe is second in the MIAA in scoring and leads the league in steals per game while ranking seventh in assist to turnover ratio. Mollie Mounsey leads the MIAA in three-point percentage and made threes. Jessica Wayne leads the MIAA in total steals despite missing eight games. They have played the toughest schedule in the nation.

Entering the Hornet's Nest

The Lady Hornets are virtually unstoppable when playing at home inside White Auditorium. So far this season they are 12-0 and have won 301 of the last 331 (.909) games. Their last loss came on Feb. 21, 2019 when they lost to Pitt State, 82-76.

It has been just under 24 years since Southern has won in Emporia. Their last win in White Auditorium was on Feb. 24, 1996 when they won 78-66.
