Late home runs by Gagan, Stevenson lift MSSU to three-game sweep of Southwest Minnesota

(From MSSU Lions Athletic News)

A home run from Troy Gagan in the ninth forced extra innings and a two-run blast from Tommy Stevenson in the 11th ended the game as the No. 17 ranked Missouri Southern baseball team swept a three-game series from Southwest Minnesota, winning 3-1 in 11 innings today at Warren Turner Field.

The Lions (13-1) were held scoreless until the ninth when Gagan led off the inning with a blast.

Jordan Fitzpatrick walked with one out in the 11th and Gagan popped up bringing Stevenson to the plate with two outs. Stevenson promptly took the first pitch he saw and deposited it over the left field fence for the game-winner.

Will Bausinger started and went six and a third innings, striking out 12 batters and allowing just one earned run, but settled for the no-decision. Corey Cowan threw two thirds of an inning, while Logan VanWey threw three innings, striking out two and limiting the Mustangs (0-3) to just one hit. Cole Woods threw the one inning and picked up win number one of the year.

Fitzpatrick, Gagan, Stevenson, Henry Kusiak and Matt Miller had a hit each for the Lions, while Fitzpatrick, Gagan and Stevenson scored a run each.

The Lions will open up MIAA play next weekend with a three-game set at Emporia State.
