The Missouri Southern baseball team finished off a perfect weekend as the Lions defeated Washburn 4-2 to complete the 2020 MIAA/GLVC Crossover at Warren Turner Field.
The Lions (10-1) got a solid start from Will Bausinger as he went six and two-thirds of an inning, striking out eight and walking none. He scattered five hits, while allowing no earned runs to move to 2-1 on the year. Corey Cowan threw an inning and a third of perfect relief with a strikeout, while Logan VanWey picked up save number four on the season with a pair of strikeouts in the ninth.
Southern got a hit each from Tommy Stevenson, Troy Gagan, Jordan Fitzpatrick, Matt Miller, Joe Kinder, Dexter Swims and Henry Kusiak. Stevenson, Gagan and Fitzpatrick each had a double, while Kusiak, Miller, Gagan and Stevenson scored a run.
Washburn (6-6) had five players with a hit each.
The Lions got on the board first in the bottom of the opening frame as Southern got back-to-back-to-back doubles from Stevenson, Gagan and Fitzpatrick, scoring Stevenson and Gagan.
Brad Willis drove in a run in the second on an RBI ground out and Washburn picked up a pair of unearned runs in the third.
Southern picked up an insurance run in the eighth when Swims singled home Miller.
The Lions went 4-0 at the crossover this weekend as the team hit .306 and had a 0.56 team ERA, striking out 41 batters and walking just five. The Southern baserunners went 11-for-13, while the Lions had a tournament high five home runs and 34 runs scored.
Southern will be back in action this weekend as the Lions play host to Southwestern Minnesota State. The Lions and the Mustangs will play a double-header on Saturday at 1 pm and a single game on Sunday at noon.
