EMPORIA, Kan.-The Missouri Southern State University Softball team opened up the 2020 Emporia State 5-State Classic with a split on Saturday. The Lions are now 6-4 on the season and they return to action with a single game on Sunday.

The Lions were shutout in the opening game of the tournament as they allowed two runs to score in the top of the second and single runs in top of the third and seventh innings.
Abby Atkin was tabbed with the loss for MSSU as she pitched the complete game and only allowed two earned runs on four hits with a walk and a strikeout.
Offensively, Southern garnered five base hits and two walks with senior Erika Lutgen going 2-for-3 at the plate.

A late run by MSSU allowed the Lions to cash in on their sixth win of the season, 5-4, over the Mavericks.
Elizabeth Windsor got the scoring started in the top of the first after nailing a 1-1 pitch to left field while Makaila Leonhart singled down the third base line. Lynnlee Parrott singled up the middle to score Leonhart before Izzy Medrano pushed her across with a single through the left side. Josie Tofpi joined the six-hit first inning antics with a single to center field to score Medrano, giving MSSU a 4-0 advantage into the bottom of the first.
After MSU-Mankato scored three runs in the bottom of the second and a game-tying homer in the fourth inning, Windsor scored the game winning run on a Leonhart single and one error to get the win.
In the game MSSU had 11 hits.
The Lions are scheduled to play the University of Minnesota Duluth Sunday, with first pitch scheduled for 10 a.m. before wrapping up the tournament in Monday at 10 a.m. (vs. University of Sioux Falls) and 12 p.m. (vs. Wayne State College).
