MSSU volleyball home opener Tuesday

The Missouri Southern volleyball team will open up the home slate of the 2018 schedule tomorrow night as the Lions play host to Missouri S&T inside Young Gymnasium. First serve is slated for 6 pm.

The Lions (0-4) are coming off a very tough opening weekend that saw the team face two ranked opponents and one that is now ranked. Southern was picked ninth in the preseason MIAA poll.


The Lions are led by sophomore Janelle Brehm who enters the contest Tuesday night ranked second nationally and first in the MIAA in attacks per set. Brehm ranks 16th nationally in total attacks, while ranking 31st in kills per set and tops in the MIAA in that category. Brehm ranks second in the MIAA in total kills and fifth in points per set, while ranking 16th in total digs. This season, Brehm is averaging 4.00 kills per set and 3.46 digs per set.

Morgan Nash ranks eighth in the MIAA in assists per set, while Shaylon Sharp ranks sixth in attacks per set. Nash ranks ninth in total assists, while Sharp ranks eighth in total attacks. The Lions, as a team rank second in the MIAA in team attacks per set, while ranking fourth in digs per set, sixth in team digs and sixth in team total attacks.

Missouri S&T (6-2) comes into the match with the Lions having taken three-of-four from its first two tournaments to start the season. The Miners were picked to finish 12th in the GLVC preseason poll. Carlie Combs is the reigning GLVC Offensive Player of the Week after averaging 4.64 kills per set and 3.43 digs per set last week.

S&T is under the direction of first-year head coach Andy Halaz. Halaz has had previous coaching stints as an assistant at Rockhurst, Saint Louis University, and Georgetown.
