MSSU soccer wins home opener in double overtime

(From MSSU Lions Athletic News)

The Missouri Southern women's soccer team received a goal form freshman Courtney Marten on a cross from sophomore Meredith Belrose to give the Lions a 2-1 victory in the team's home opener inside Fred G. Hughes Stadium Tuesday morning.

The Lions' (3-0-1) Belrose went left toward the center of the field and winded up for a straight-away shot that found Marten behind the goalkeeper for the win.

Marten also assisted in MSSU jumping out to a 1-0 lead with 12 minutes to go in regulation. She made a steal and pushed the ball down the field to find Andrea Gamez on a crossing pass right in front of the net. Gamez launched it to the left of the goalkeeper for the early lead.

Harding (0-4-0) was able to put themselves in position for a penalty kick with six minutes to go in the second period and came out successful, forcing overtime.

Junior goalkeeper Luz Galindo went the distance, allowing one goal on five shots faced in 102:24 minutes of action between the posts.

Southern hits the road for a pair of non-conference matches beginning at Northeastern State on Friday, Sept. 14 at 7:30 pm, followed by a meeting with Southwest Baptist on Sunday, Sept. 16 at 2:00 pm.
