MSSU volleyball falls in three sets to Missouri S&T

The Missouri Southern volleyball team dropped a match tonight to Missouri S&T, three sets to none inside Young Gymnasium. Individual set scores were 14-25, 21-25 and 21-25.

The Lions (0-5) were led offensively by Sydney Dose as she finished with seven kills and eight digs. Alicia Pickett had four kills and six blocks, while Morgan Nash dished out 16 assists. Janelle Brehm had 11 digs in hte match, while Katie Paine finished with nine digs.



S&T (7-2) was led by Emilee Schlader with 19 kills and six digs. Sarah McGinnis had 25 assists, while Corinne Stulce had 16 digs. Sarah Cavanaugh had ten assists.

The Miners jumped out to a 10-4 lead early on in the first set. The Lions got within five three times (13-8, 15-10 and 16-11) but couldn't get any closer as S&T won set one 25-14.

Southern got out on top 8-4 in the second set, but the Miners stormed back and went on a 10-3 run to lead 14-11 midway through the set. The Lions tied the set at 19 after going on an 8-5 run and took a 20-19 lead the next point on a service ace from Kylee Kaaihue, forcing an S&T timeout. The Miners, however, tied it coming out of the timeout and scored six of the final seven points to win the set.

The third set saw the Lions score the first five points and lead 10-6, forcing a Miners' timeout. S&T, however, came back and went on an 11-2 run to lead 15-12 midway, forcing a Lions' timeout. The Miner's lead reached seven (21-14) before the Lions went on a 7-4 run to get within three (24-21) and force another S&T timeout, but A kill from the Miners' Schlader ended the match on the first point after the timeout.

The Lions had seven team blocks in the set and 41 digs.

Southern will be back in action this weekend as the Lions travel to Oklahoma to participate in the MIAA/GAC crossover hosted by Oklahoma Baptist. Southern will play the host Bison and Arkansas Tech on day one, while facing off with Northwestern Oklahoma and Southern Nazarene on day two.
