MSSU soccer records first win, blanking Drury 2-0

(From MSSU Lions Athletic News)

Springfield, Mo. - The Missouri Southern soccer team outshot the Drury Panthers 23-6 on its way to the team's first victory of season (2-0) inside Harris Stadium Sunday evening.

The Lions (1-0-1) took the lead in the second period after sophomore Glory Amalaha went down upon receiving a pass for a possible shot. Sophomore Meredith Belrose was sent in to take the penalty kick and succeeded by poking the ball toward the right side of the net for the first goal of her colligate career to give the Lions a 1-0 advantage.

Then in the 79th minute as the ball was directed towards the Panthers goalkeeper, junior forward Jessica Edwards jumped straight up and blocked a clear-out attempt by the goalkeeper, which directed the ball back in the direction of the goal to put the Lions in front by two.

It would be the team's first win over the Panthers in program history during a four-game stretch (1999, 2014, 2015, and 2018). Southern limited the Panther's offensive attack to one shot throughout the first period as the defense allowed goalkeeper Luz Galindo to face only two shots for the entire game.

The Lions return to Joplin for the home opener against Harding University inside Hal Bodon Field on Friday, Sept. 7 at 6:00 pm.
