MSSU volleyball defeats Southwest Baptist in four

Bolivar, Mo. -- Janelle Brehm had 14 kills, while Kylee Kaaihue dished out 38 assists, and the Missouri Southern volleyball team got a road win tonight, three sets to one at Southwest Baptist. Individual set scores were 25-21, 16-25, 26-24 and 25-23.

The Lions (1-11, 1-2 MIAA) were led offensively by Brehm's night as she had 14 kills and hit .279 with seven digs. Alicia Pickett had ten kills, while Kaaihue had 38 assists. Morgan Nash had a match-high 17 digs, while Bridgette Jaeger had eight kills and nine digs.



SBU ( 4-12, 0-3 MIAA) got 12 kills from Dalane Tipton.

The Lions hit .272 as a team, with 52 kills, 46 assists and 50 digs.

With the score tied at 12 in set one, the Lions scored four out of the next five points to lead 16-13 and forcing an SBU timeout. The Lions led 20-14, but three-straight by the Bearcats forced a Southern timeout. The Lions, however, scored five of the final nine points to take the set.

Set two saw the Bearcats go on an 8-2 run midway through the set to take control and cruise to the set win.

The two teams traded points for most of the third set, but the Lions led 21-16 late in the set, forcing a Bearcats timeout. SBU, stormed back and tied the set at 22, but kills from Brehm and Pickett ended the set for the Lions.

The fourth set was tied at 13, before the Lions went on a 3-1 run to lead 16-14 and force an SBU timeout. The set was tied at 20, forcing a Lions' timeout, but Southern scored five of the final eight points to take the match, capping off the night with a kill from Olivia Lewis.

The Lions will be back in action this Friday night when Southern plays host to Northwest Missouri. First-serve is slated for 6 pm from Young Gym.
