MSSU volleyball falls in three to Pitt State

Pittsburg, Kan. -- The Missouri Southern volleyball team hung close with Pittsburg State, but the Lions fell three sets to none tonight inside John Lance Arena. Individual set scores were 23-25, 21-25 and 15-25.

The Lions (0-10, 0-1 MIAA) were led offensively by Janelle Brehm with nine kills and six digs. Kylie Kaaihue had 16 assists, while Morgan Nash had 19 digs. Alicia Pickett had three blocks.

Pitt (12-2, 1-0 MIAA) got nine kills from Lauren Reiger and 24 assists from Camryn Blanton.



Southern trailed 16-12 in the first set before the Lions rolled off three-straight points, capped by an ace from Bridgette Jaeger, forcing a PSU timeout. A fourth-straight point, this time on a kill from Brehm, tied the set at 16. Southern trailed 22-18 and called a timeout, but coming out of the timeout, the Lions scored three of the next four points to get within one (23-22). Pitt, however scored the final two points to take the set.

Set two saw the Lions lead 4-2 to start the frame capped by a block from Shaylon Sharp and Pickett. The lead was 6-3, but Pitt reeled off a 6-2 run to go up 9-8 before a pair of points from the Lions gave Southern a 10-9 lead midway through the set. Pitt went on a 7-0 run and led 16-10, never looking back.

Set three saw the two teams trade the first eight points, before the Gorillas went on a 4-0 run to lead 8-4. Southern then went on a 5-0 run to lead 9-8, forcing a PSU timeout and then the Lions tied the set up at ten on a kill from Sharp. The Gorillas, however, went on a 6-0 run and cruised to the final set win.

The Lions will be back in action tomorrow afternoon as Southern travels to Central Oklahoma for a matchup with 15th-ranked Central Oklahoma. First serve is slated for 3 pm.
