MSSU women's golf to compete at Northeastern State Regional Preview

(From MSSU Lions Athletic News)

The Missouri Southern women's golf team will get back in action this week as the Lions will head to Muskogee, Okla. to compete in the Northeastern State Regional Preview, hosted at Muskogee Country Club.

Southern will play 18 holes on both Tuesday and Wednesday of this week.

This will be the Lions' third event of the fall season after finishing 16th in each of the first two tournaments the team has competed in this fall. Southern competed at the season-opening NSU invitational that was held in Tahlequah at Cherokee Springs GC, and was at the Central Oklahoma Invitational two weeks ago.

Coming into the event, Kylie Carnes leads the charge for the Lions with a stroke average of 85.5. Allison Cunningham is at 86.8, while Maggie Moore is at 88.5. Kaitlyn Gilliland is averaging a stroke average of 92.0, while Elizabeth Poe is at 94.0.

Those five will represent the team that will travel to Muskogee. Head Coach Mike Wheeler said he hopes to see the same continued improvement he has seen up to this point.

"We hope to improve our scoring," Wheeler said. "The ladies have been working on all aspects of their games. Weather is going to play a role in Muskogee with much colder temps and a north wind. It should be interesting."

Southern will be one of nine MIAA teams competing in the tournament, joining host NSU, as well as Central Missouri, Central Oklahoma, Lindenwood, Missouri Western, Nebraska-Kearney, Fort Hays State and Northwest Missouri. Other regional opponents joining the fray at the tournament will be Southwestern Oklahoma, Henderson State, Minnesota State, Oklahoma Baptist, Harding, Southern Arkansas, Southern Nazarene, Northwestern Oklahoma and Concordia-St. Paul.
