MSSU spikers fall to Fort Hays State

(From MSSU Lions Athletic News)

Hays, Kan. - The Missouri Southern volleyball team got double-double's from both Janelle Brehm and Shaylon Sharp, but the Lions couldn't put away the Tigers falling three sets to none at Fort Hays State tonight. Individual set scores were 15-25, 21-25, 25-21 and 15-25.

Southern (2-18, 2-8 MIAA) was led by Brehm and Sharp's night. Brehm finished with a double-double of 17 kills and 19 digs, while Sharp finished with 12 kills and 11 digs. Kylee Kaaihue dishes out 42 assists, while Morgan Nash has a team-high 23 digs. Mikayla Monk and Alicia Pickett had four and three blocks, respectively.

Hays (7-15, 1-9 MIAA) had two in double-figure kills, led by 16 from Isabelle Reynolds.

Set one saw two tied scores and one lead change as an 8-0 run for the Tigers midway through the set proved pivotal.

Set two saw five tied scores and two lead changes as the Tigers led 18-10, forcing a Southern timeout. The Lions, however, came out of the timeout and went on an 8-4 run to cut the lead to four (22-18) after a kill from CC Pollard, but the Lions could not get any closer.

Set three saw ten ties and two lead changes, but it was Southern that used a mid-set run to force a change. Trailing 9-6 early on, the Lions went on an 8-3 run to take a 14-12 lead and force a Tigers' timeout. Fort Hays tied the set at 18 late to force a Lions' timeout, but Southern went on a 5-3 run to lead 23-21 to force another FHSU timeout and score the final two points to take the set.

The fourth set swung back the way of the Tigers. Four tied scores and two lead changes were part of the set that saw the Tigers get out to an early 10-7 lead. That lead ballooned to 21-12 late, before a Lions' timeout, and Southern couldn't get any closer.

The Lions will be back in action this Tuesday night when Southern plays host to Southwest Baptist. First-serve from Young Gymnasium is slated for 7 pm.
