MSSU volleyball defeats Southwest Baptist

The Missouri Southern volleyball team got out in front and won the first two sets and despite SBU tying the match up, the Lions came out on top three sets to two tonight inside Young Gymnasium. Individual set scores were 25-18, 25-21, 22-25, 19-25 and 15-10.

Southern (3-19, 3-9 MIAA) got a stellar night from Janelle Brehm as she posted a double-double with 24 kills and 14 digs. Kylee Kaaihue had 57 assists, while Morgan Nash had 21 digs. Mikayla Monk had nine kills and three digs, while Alicia Pickett had five kills and seven blocks.

SBU (4-21, 0-12 MIAA) got 13 kills from Rachel Pfeifer and 11 from Greysen Roster.



Set one was give-and-go for the first nine points, before a 3-0 run from the Lions, capped by a kill from Kaaihue made the score 12-9. The lead was 15-10 after an ace from Shaylon Sharp, forcing an SBU timeout. Southern's lead reached 23-17, before another timeout from the Bearcats and the Lions scored two of the final three points of the set to take the win.

Set two saw the Lions jump out to a 6-1 lead early on after a kill from Brehm. The lead was seven (12-5) before an SBU timeout after a block from Monk and CC Pollard. The Bearcats got back within four (17-13), but two quick points from the Lions made the score 19-13 after an ace from Nash. The Bearcats got back within three this time at 19-16, but two quick points from the Lions forced a timeout for the Bearcats before the Lions put away the set on a kill from Pollard.

Set three saw SBU jump out to a 7-2 lead, forcing a Southern timeout. SBU led 17-12, before a 6-1 run by the Lions tied the set at 18 and forced an SBU timeout. SBU, however, increased its lead to 23-19 and forced another Lions' timeout. Despite the Lions getting within two (24-22), SBU put away the set on the next point.

Set four saw SBU rush out to a 5-1 lead and force a Southern timeout. The Lions got back within one (11-10), before SBU reeled off a 6-3 run to lead 17-13 midway through the set. Southern again got within two (17-15) and trailed 21-18 late. The Bearcats, however, scored four of the final five points to take the set and force extra points.

Set five saw the Lions open up a 7-4 lead early on to force an SBU timeout and Southern led 8-4 at the turn. A kill from Brehm made the score 10-6 midway and a kill from Pickett put the Lions up 11-7, forcing another SBU timeout. The Bearcats got within two (12-10) and forced a Southern timeout, but the Lions scored the final three points to take the match.

The Lions will be back in action this Friday as Southern plays host to Pittsburg State. The match will be the Lions' Pink Match and first serve is slated for 6 pm.
