MSSU falls to ninth-ranked Washburn in three

The Missouri Southern volleyball team got six kills each from Bridgette Jaeger and Shaylon Sharp as the Lions fell 3-0 tonight to No. 9 ranked Washburn inside Young Gymnasium. Individual set scores were 17-25, 13-25 and 13-25.

Southern (2-16, 2-6 MIAA) got the six kills from Jaeger and Sharp, as well as five kills and ten digs from Janelle Brehm. Kylee Kaaihue had 23 assists, while Morgan Nash had 19 digs. Jaeger added seven digs, while Sharp added six digs.

Washburn (20-0, 8-0 MIAA) got ten kills and 14 digs from Genna Berg, while Shayla Conner had 26 assists and 13 digs.



The first set saw six ties and two lead changes. Southern went on a 4-1 run early in the first set to tie the set at seven. The set was tied again at eight and nine before a kill from Brehm gave the Lions an 10-9 lead. Washburn, however, went on a 7-1 run to lead 16-11 and force a Lions' timeout. The lead was 20-14 before another timeout from Southern and the Ichabods took the set 25-17.

The second set saw the Lions open up a 3-0 lead early on, but Washburn stormed back and led 9-5, forcing a Southern timeout. The set was tied twice and there was one lead change, but the Ichabods led from there on out.

The third set saw Washburn open up a 11-4 lead early on. The lead was ten (19-9) late, but the Lions scored two of the next three points to cut the lead to nine (20-11). Washburn, would score five of the final seven points to take the match.

The Lions will be back in action tomorrow night as Southern plays host to Emporia State at 6 pm inside Young Gymnasium.
