Janelle Brehm had 15 kills and 12 digs, but the Missouri Southern volleyball team lost a tight three-set match tonight to Pittsburg State. Individual set scores were 20-25, 23-25 and 18-25.
Brehm added the double-double for the Lions (3-20, 3-10 MIAA), while Kylee Kaaihue dished out 23 assists and Morgan Nash had 20 digs. Alicia Pickett had three blocks in the match.
Pitt (16-10, 5-8 MIAA) had a pair in double-figures for kills, led by Lauren Regier.
Set one saw the Lions open up a 9-5 lead early on, but the lead was just two (12-10) midway through, forcing a Lions' timeout. Pitt led 19-16, but two-straight from the Lions got Southern back within one and forced a Gorrillas' timeout. Pitt scored three of the next four coming out of the timeout and held on for the win.
Set two saw Pitt jump out to a 9-4 lead, forcing a Southern timeout, but the Lions went on a 7-2 run to tie the set at 11, forcing a PSU timeout. Pitt led 16-13, but the Lions tied it at 17, 18, 19, 20 and again at 21, before scoring two straight to lead 23-21, forcing a PSU timeout. The Gorillas, however, scored four-straight points out of the timeout to take the set.
Set three saw the Lions lead 7-6 early forcing a PSU timeout. The two teams would each take their two timeouts before the midway point of the set, the last when PSU took a timeout leading 16-11. Pitt finished the set on an 8-7 run to take the match.
Southern will be back in action tomorrow as the Lions will play host to 15th-ranked Central Oklahoma. First serve is set for noon. The match will be senior day for the Lions as Southern honors its two seniors: Erica Freudinger and Addison Berry.
