Dalton James rushed for over 100 yards and a touchdown, but the Missouri Southern football team fell 33-10 Saturday on Homecoming inside Fred G. Hughes Stadium at the Robert W. Plaster Sports Complex.
The game was delayed nearly an hour to start, kicking off at 2:55 pm.
Southern (0-6, 0-6 MIAA) got 106 yards on 22 carries from James with a score. James also caught five passes out of the backfield for 43 yards. Shemar Coleman rushed 15 times for 50 yards, while Sean Kelly was 8-of-15 for 124 yards passing. LeEarl Patterson went 9-of-13 passing. Erick Dedrick caught fie passes for 22 yards, while Arrion Howard caught a pass for 49 yards.
Paul Wolff had both punting and field goal duties today, going 1-of-1 in field goals with a 43-yarder, with seven punts for an average of 37.3.
Defensively, Alan Glanville had a second-straight 15-plus tackle game with 17 stops on the day. He had a tackle for a loss of five yards with one forced fumble. Justin Legier had eight stops with 1.5 for a loss, while Brian Henderson had a fumble recovery. Korenzo Credit had an interception in the endzone stopping a drive for the Griffons. Romello Jackson picked up his first sack of the season with a loss of eight yards.
Western (4-2, 4-2 MIAA) got 119 yards from Shemar Griffith on the ground, while Dom Marino went 12-of-18 passing with an interception and 139 yards through the air.
Southern out gained Western in the air 165-146 and picked up 326 yards of total offense with 161 on the ground. The Lions led the time of possession battle with 31:03 to Western's 28:57, and was much-improved on third downs, converting 9-of-19, while limiting Western to just 3-of-11.
Western got on the board first, leading 10-0 at the end of one. A second field goal from Sam Aviles, this time from 32, gave the Griffons a 13-0 lead with 4:44 left on the clock in the second quarter and that would be the halftime score.
Southern started the second half with the ball, but the Lions were forced to punt and Western made use of the change of possession, returning the punt 54 yards as Brandin Dandridge found the endzone to make the score 20-0.
Southern got on the board late in the third as Wollf hit from 43 to make the score 20-3 with 1:14 left and that would be the score after three.
Western answered back with another field goal from Aviles, this time from 39, before a fumble from Patterson was recovered by Kobe Cummings in the endzone to make the score 30-3.
Avilles' fourth field goal of the day, this time from 49 made the score 33-3 with three minutes left in the game.
Southern made good on its final drive of the game as Coleman rushed for carries of three and four, before catching a pass from Kelly for nine yards to move the ball to the Lions' 36-yard line. A pass from Kelly to Cole Dunbar went for 12 yards and moved the ball near midfield, before Coleman pushed it over the 50-yard line. Kelly then hit Howard for 49 yard to put the ball on the Western one-yard line before James pushed it in for a score with two seconds left on the clock.
The Lions will be back in action next weekend as Southern travels to Washburn. Kickoff from Topeka is slated for 1 pm.
