MSSU volleyball falls in four to Emporia State

(From MSSU Lions Athletic News)

Janelle Brehm posted a double-double, while the Missouri Southern volleyball team had three in double-figure digs, but the Lions fell in four sets tonight to Emporia State. Individual set scores were 25-16, 17-25, 17-25 and 22-25.

Southern (2-17,-2-7 MIAA) was led by Brehm's performance with 13 kills and 11 digs. Alicia Pickett posted ten kills and six blocks, while Bridgette Jaeger had eight kills and 12 digs. Kylee Kaaihue had 34 assists and seven digs, while Morgan Nash had 26 digs. The Lions had nine team blocks on the night.

Emporia (10-12, 4-5 MIAA) got 19 kills from Taylor Otting.

The Lions led from start to finish in set one, opening up a 6-1 lead initially and leading 11-5 before an ESU timeout.

The second set saw the Hornets return the favor as the set saw two tied scores, but no lead changes. ESU led 9-6 early on to force a Southern timeout, but the Lions fought back. Trailing 17-10, Southern reeled off three of the next four points to force an ESU timeout. The Hornets, however, held on for the win.

Set three saw the Hornets jump out to a 6-4 lead and eventually led 14-5, forcing MSSU timeouts each time. The Lions got within six (17-11) midway through the set to force an ESU timeout, but couldn't get any closer.

Set four saw the Lions trail 9-6 before a Southern timeout, but the Lions got right back in it, trailing by only two (15-13) after a kill from Kaaihue. Southern trailed by two late (23-21) forcing a Hornets timeout, but wouldn't get any closer as ESU closed out the match.

The Lions will be back in action as Southern travels to Nebraska-Kearney on Friday and Fort Hays State on Saturday.
