Skiles records double-double as MSSU women romp over Graceland 89-56

Sophomore guard Layne Skiles finished third in scoring (12) and first in rebounds (10) for her first career double-double as the Missouri Southern women's basketball team scored its first victory of the season over the Graceland Yellow Jackets by a score of 89-56 inside the Leggett and Platt Athletic Center Wednesday night.

Senior forward Chasidee Owens led all scorers with 14 points on 5-of-11 shooting from the field to go along with nine rebounds. Junior center Zoe Campbell added 13 points and seven rebounds while also recording a block towards a total of 64 career blocks which puts her in a tie for fifth all-time in school history.








Senior guard Destiny Cozart logged 12 points and junior guard Morgan Brightwell chipped in with ten points off the bench. Senior forward Jordan Schoenberger grabbed nine rebounds in the win.

Two minutes into the game, the Lions (1-2) had back-to-back three-pointers by Cozart and Owens to put Southern in front, 9-2. The Yellow Jackets (1-4) responded on a 12-6 run to go up one (15-14) with four minutes remaining in the first period. Southern regained the lead moments later to come out of the first period with a three-point advantage (23-20).

Both teams traded baskets to force a 24-24 tie early on in the second period, but it was the Lions that closed out the first half strong as Cozart launched a three-point shot that swished as time expired. The shot capped off a 20-8 spurt for the Lions and led to the home team holding a 44-32 lead at the break.

Out of the break, the Lions went through the third period and into the fourth period extending its lead to as much as 32 points (76-44) and would never relinquish it for the victory.

Missouri Southern begins a four-game road trip on Saturday against Illinois-Springfield at 7:30 pm.
