The Missouri Southern Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) helped a local shelter as the student-athletes completed its 10th-annual Trick or Treat So Others Can Eat campaign last week.
Student-Athletes from the department went out and canvassed area neighborhoods the week prior to Halloween and collected can goods that were in turn donated to Souls Harbor in downtown Joplin.
The 2019 campaign was easily one of the best-ever for the group as a total of 6,215 food items were donated that according to the shelter will keep their shelves stocked into March of 2020.
The athletic teams competed to see who would collect the most per student-athlete and softball won with an average of 59 cans collected per student-athlete.
"I have not met a more diligent group of kids than the groups that you all continue to put forth," said Diana Gurley with Soul's Harbor. "We are overwhelmed with the generosity they brought forward to come together to help the homeless and hungry. They did a wonderful job with the food they brought in which will take our operation well into February and March. These kids have provided for and touched the lives of people they will most likely never meet and that should be commended."
