MSSU men cruise to 113-63 win over Saint Mary in home opener

The 10th-ranked Missouri Southern men's basketball team held visiting Saint Mary to just 30 points in the second half as the Lions cruised to a 113-63 victory today on Robert Corn Court inside the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.

Southern (3-0) had every player that played score today. Cam Martin led all scorers with 18 points on 7-of-9 shooting with nine rebounds. Kinzer Lambert scored 16 points, while Winston Dessesow scored 11 points and added six assists. Dexter Frisbie and Stan Scott scored ten points each, while Reggie Tharp, Braelon Walker and Parker Jennings scored eight points each.

Saint Mary (4-1) had both Cameron Southern and Donovan Sinegal with 13 points.

The Lions opened the game on a 20-10 run as a dunk from Martin with 12 minutes to go doubled the Southern lead. Saint Mary had got within five (26-21) with just more than nine minutes to go, but a three from Jennings and a fast-break layup from Stan Scott pushed the lead back to ten (31-21) a minute later.








A three from Winston Dessesow with just more than five to go gave the Lions a 40-23 lead and a three from Walker with four to play in the half pushed the lead to 20 (46-26). A dunk from Ted Brown off a long-distance pass from Dessesow pushed the lead to 25 (51-26) with three minutes to go. The Lions finished the final four minutes of the half on a 19-7 run and led 62-33 at the break.

Back-to-back three's from Clark, the second coming with 15:30 on the clock to make the score 77-43. A turnaround jumper from Dexter Frisbie made the score 87-48 with 11:26 to go, while a layup from Frisbie with five minutes to go put the Lions over the century mark at 101-59.

The Lions shot 56 percent from the field in the game and forced 16 Saint Mary turnovers, scoring 24 points off the miscues. Southern had a 55-25 advantage in rebounds, including a 22-8 advantage on the offensive boards which led to a 32-6 advantage in second-chance points.

The Lions will be back in action next week when Southern travels to Truman on Thursday and Upper Iowa on Saturday.
