The Missouri Southern men's basketball team held Culver-Stockton to just 16 points in the first half as the Lions cruised to a 110-46 victory over the Wildcats tonight on Robert Corn Court inside the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
Southern (5-1) saw every player in the lineup score led by Cam Martin who had 17 points and four rebounds in 20 minutes of play. Kinzer Lambert scored 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting, while Kyle Younge had a career-high 12 points. Reggie Tharp and Winston Dessesow had ten points each.
Culver-Stockton (2-6) had ten points each from Troy Green and Mason Vires.
Southern started the game on an 11-0 run, forcing a Wildcats' timeout, and a three from Walker with just under 14 minutes to go in the half pushed the Southern lead to 15 (20-5). A jumper from Younge with eight minutes to go made the score 28-7 Lions, while a pair of freebies from Elyjah Clark with 7:14 on the clock pushed the lead to 30-8.
A pair of free throws from Lambert made the score 40-12 with 3:37 to go in the half, while a layup from Dessesow with a minute to go pushed the lead to 45-14. A jumper in the paint from Dexter Frisbie as the clock wound down made the halftime score 49-16, Lions.
The Lions started the second half on a 29-9 run after a bucket from Dessesow made the score 78-25 with 11:14 to go in the half. A pair of freebies from Younge with 8:49 left pushed the lead to 88-27, while a three from Aleksa Markovic put the Lions over the century mark at 100-40 with three minutes left.
The Lions shot 59 percent from the field in the game, including 64 percent in the second half. Southern out rebounded the Wildcats 44-25, while forcing 25 turnovers, scoring 29 points off of the miscues. The Lions had a 60-14 advantage in the paint and a 28-0 advantage in fast-break points.
Clark failed to make a three pointer for the first time in 37 games, stopping his second-longest streak in his career for consecutive games with a three. The 46 points is the lowest point total for an opponent since the Lions held Avila to 48 in 2011.
Southern will open up MIAA play on Tuesday night as the Lions play host to Pittsburg State. Tipoff is set for 7:30 pm.
