MSSU football falls to Pitt State 65-6 in annual Miners Bowl

Pittsburg, Kan. - The Missouri Southern football team finished the regular season today, falling 65-6 to Pittsburg State inside Carnie-Smith Stadium for the 2019 Miners Bowl.

Southern's (2-9, 2-9, MIAA) Jacob Park went 14-of-43 for 178 yards and a rushing score. Nine different Lions caught a pass, led by four receptions each from Travier Fields-Jackson and Devond Blair Jr. Jackson reeled in 64 yards, while Blair had 35 yards. Benjamin Phillips had three catches for 88 yards.

Richard Jordan Jr. had 18 tackles in the game, which moved him into a tie for 7th place in a single-season with 101 tackles. Colton Winder had 16 tackles in the game, giving him 95 on the season. That mark ranks second-highest in Division II for tackles by a freshman this season, while Fontez Davis finished with 12 tackles and a tackle for a loss.








Jamie Tago had eight tackles and two for a loss with a pass breakup, while Alex Alvarado had a forced fumble and Levi Marlay had a fumble recovery.

Paul Wolff had eight punts for 321 yards and an average of 40.1 on the day. For his career, Wolff finishes with the second-highest career punting average at 40.5 yards per punt. Riley Hathorn finishes just behind Wolff at 40.1 yards per punt in his career.

Pitt (6-5, 6-5 MIAA) was led by Lorenzo West who caught seven passes for 176 yards and four scores.

The Lions picked up their lone touchdown in the first quarter as Park rushed the ball in from one yard out to make the score 24-6 with 3:15 left in the first quarter. The touchdown capped a six-play, 75 yard that took 2:24 off the clock.

In year one of the Jeff Sims era, the Lions saw the most wins and highest point differential in three years and had the National Player of the Week in Park against Northeastern State. Southern set the MIAA record with 42 first downs against NSU, while also setting school records with 86 points and 743 total yards at NSU.

The Lions also set a single-game record with five passing touchdowns by Park at NSU, while his eight touchdowns responsible for were also a single-game record.

Charles West and Keandre Bledsoe set receiving records. West finished the season with 44 receptions, setting the record for most receptions by a running back in a single-season, while Bledsoe set the tight end reception record with 35 catches.

The team recorded its highest GPA in more than seven years, while working toward a total of more than 878 hours of community service in the Joplin area.
