Arkadelphia, Ark. - Senior guard Destiny Cozart scored a career-high 28 points on 8-for-13 from behind the arc in Missouri Southern State's loss to Henderson State by a final score of 81-78 inside the Duke Wells Center Tuesday night.
Down by three and 2:47 to go in regulation, sophomore Amber Buch scored a layup and a free throw to force the Lions (2-5) into a 73-73 tie with HSU. The Reddies (5-1) responded with a small 5-0 run on their way to securing the three-point win and sweep the season series.
Buch scored a career-high 14 points while Cozart's nine made field goals and eight three-point shots were also career highs. Senior forward Chasidee Owens added 19 points and seven rebounds while junior center Zoe Campbell recorded her second career double-double with ten points and 11 rebounds.
Both teams pushed the pace in the first period by trading baskets left and right toward four ties, including a 12-12-draw heading into the first media timeout. Southern came out of the timeout with back-to-back baskets for its first lead of the game, but the Reddies came back on an 11-3 spurt to take a 23-19 advantage into the second period.
HSU jumped out on a 9-3 run to extend its lead to ten at the 7:28 mark and then added another basket for a 12-point lead at halftime (48-36).
MSSU battled back to get within six points (59-53) with 2:50 to go in the third period and then rattled off nine straight points in the fourth to pull within two at the 7:50 mark of the fourth period. The Lions found themselves down by two several times after that, but the late run fell short with the Reddies securing the victory.
Missouri Southern opens up MIAA play against rival Pittsburg State on Tuesday at 5:30 pm.
