Campbell posts double-double, but MSSU women lose to Henderson State 79-70

(From MSSU Lions Athletic News)

Searcy, Ark. - Junior center Zoe Campbell posted a career day for the Missouri Southern women's basketball team, leading the squad with 21 points and 16 rebounds in a 79-70 loss to Henderson State inside the Rhodes-Reaves Field House Friday afternoon.

Campbell also is tied with the second-most blocks in single game history with five and is now eight career blocks behind Fatai Hala'Api'Api (64) for fifth and needs 11 to surpass Marie Scott (67) at fourth.

The Lions (0-1) shot 42-percent from the field and grabbed 44 rebounds compared to HSU (1-0) who ended the game shooting a little over 30 percent while grabbing nine rebounds less than the Lions.

Senior guard Destiny Cozart added 20 point, six rebounds, six assists, and two steals while senior forward Chasidee Owens tacked on 16 points from a 5-for-10 shooting day.

Sophomore guard Layne Skiles poured in eight points and grabbed seven rebounds in her first career start for Southern.

After finding themselves down by the largest deficit of 17 half-way through the third quarter, the Lions battled back to get within four (56-52) when Cozart made all three free-throws to cap off an 11-2 run in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter. That would be as close as the Lions would get from that point forward.

Southern is back tomorrow to face host Harding University at 4:45 pm for day two of the GAC/MIAA Challenge.
