MSSU volleyball to open play in MIAA Tournament Thursday

(From MSSU Lions Athletic News)

The Missouri Southern volleyball team will open up the 2019 MIAA Volleyball Tournament tomorrow evening as the Lions will take on No. 1 seed and No. 2 ranked Nebraska-Kearney at 5 pm inside Hy-Vee Arena.

The Lions (13-17) will be taking on the Lopers (30-0) for the third time this season.

This will be the first trip for the Lions to the MIAA Tournament since the 2007 season when the Lions faced off with Truman State in the opening round of that year's tournament.

Noteables - Alicia Pickett leads the MIAA in both total blocks and blocks per set, while ranking 41st nationally in total blocks. She has moved her way up the record books at Southern as Pickett now is the career leader in block assists (356), while ranking fourth in total blocks (417). Pickett has the second-highest single-season total in block assists with her 127 as a sophomore in 2017, while her 139 total blocks from that season rank seventh all-time in a single-season at MSSU.

Morgan Nash ranks second in the MIAA and fourth nationally with six triple-doubles this year. In conference play, Janelle Brehm ranks fourth in kills per set with a 3.32 per set average, and against Fort Hays State in the regular-season finale, Brehm became the 11th member of the 1,000 kill club at MSSU. She has 1,016 kills in her career at Southern and needs just nine kills to break into the top-ten in that category.

Brehm leads the Lions at 3.25 kills per set, while also posting a mark of 3.68 digs per set. Last week, Brehm averaged 5.00 kills and 5.15 digs per set against UNK and Fort Hays State. Brooklynn McCain is averaging 3.82 digs per set, while Emalee Lowe is at 3.67 per set. Lowe averaged 6.71 digs per set last week against UNK and FHSU. Pickett is averaging 1.03 blocks per set.

Scouting the opposition - UNK has six different players that average 2.00 kills per set or higher, led by 2.94 from Julianne Jackson. Maddie Squires averages 10.90 assists per set, while Lindsay Nottleman averages 5.06 digs per set.

Up Next - A win against the Lopers would pitt the Lions against the winner of the Northwest Missouri and Missouri Western match at 5 pm on Friday night. The complete tournament bracket is listed below.
