MSSU men's cross country, Kimutai repeat as NCAA Central Region champs

Missouri Southern men's cross country, as well as sophomore Gidieon Kimuatai, both repeated as Regional Champions as the Lions competed in the 2019 NCAA Division II Central Region Championships hosted by the Lions at the Tom Rutledge Cross Country Course.

The sixth-ranked Lions repeat as team champions and qualify for the 2019 NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships that will be held in Sacramento, Calif. on November 23. It is the second time since 2009 the Lions have won a Regional Championship and is the lowest amount of points (52) scored by the program in regional history, besting the 55 points they scored last year.








The Lions defeated second-place Northwest Missouri by 12 points as the Bearcats had 64 points as a team. Augustana scored 76 points and all three schools automatically qualify for the Division II Championships. Fort Hays State was fourth, followed by Sioux Falls, Nebraska-Kearney, Mary, Minnesota State-Moorhead, Pittsburg State and Minnesota-Duluth for the top 10 scores.

Kimutai repeated as the individual champion and the sophomore has won every event he has raced in this season. He traversed the 10k course in a time of 29:14.5, besting his time from last year by more than 30 seconds.

Nickson Kiptoo placed eighth at 30:35.5, while Ryan Riddle was 10th in a time of 30:48.3. Cody Berry was 13th in a time of 30:54.7, while Jarod Ozee placed 20th in a time of 31:24.3 as all five were named All-Region. Kevin Koester was 51st in a time of 32:19.4, while Josh Webb placed 85th in a time of 33:02.3.

The Lions will be back in action on November 23 as Southern will compete in the 2019 NCAA Division II Cross Country Championships in Sacramento, Calif.
