MSSU volleyball falls to Nebraska-Kearney despite double-doubles by Brehm, Nash

(From MSSU Lions Athletic News)

Kansas City, Mo. - The Missouri Southern volleyball team picked up ten kills and 17 digs from Janelle Brehm and Brooklynn McCain was just three digs from tying a three-set school record, but the Lions fell three sets to none tonight against No. 2 ranked Nebraska-Kearney in the opening round of the 2019 MIAA Volleyball Tournament inside Hy-Vee Arena.

Southern (13-18) was led by Brehm's night as she added a pair of blocks to her ten kills and 17 digs. The match was her 17th double-double of the season. Morgan Nash dished out 13 assists and added 13 digs for a double-double of her own, while McCain had 27 digs, just three from tying the three-set single-game MSSU record.

UNK (31-0) was led by Michaela Bartels' 15 kills, while Lindsay Nottlemann had 27 digs.

The Lopers opened up a 12-4 lead early in the first set but three-straight points for the Lions cut the UNK lead to five (12-7). The Lopers' lead reached ten (19-9) forcing a Lions' timeout, and the Lopers would take the set with an ace.

The two teams traded points early on in the second set, with the set being tied four times in the first 11 points, the last at 11-11. The Lopers went on a 7-2 run from that point on and led 17-13, forcing a Southern timeout. The run to end the set reached 14-3.

Southern opened up the third set on a 6-1 run and led 7-2, forcing a UNK timeout. Southern led 10-8 when the lights went out in the facility for a minor power outage and out of the timeout, a kill from Nash made the score 11-8, Lions. UNK, however, answered with a run of its own, leading 16-12 after an 8-1 run forced a Lions' timeout. A kill from Bartels closed out the match.

Alicia Pickett finishes her career at Southern with 357 block assists, the career-leader in that category. Brehm finishes with the third-most attacks in a single-season while her 1,026 career kills moves her into the top-ten list at No. 10 all-time in Southern history.

The Lions saw an improvement of 10 wins from year one to two in Kalie Mader's tenure and the trip to Kansas City for the MIAA Tournament was the first for the program since the 2007 season.
