MSSU's Janelle Brehm joins 1,000 kill club in loss to Fort Hays State

Hays, Kan. -- Missouri Southern junior Janelle Brehm became just the 11th member of the 1,000 kill club at MSSU today as the Lions fell on the road at Fort Hays State, three sets to one. Individual set scores were 25-20, 17-25, 18-25 and 23-25.

The Lions (13-17, 6-14 MIAA) will now move on to play in the opening round of the 2019 MIAA Volleyball Tournament in Kansas City inside Hy-Vee Arena. The Lions will take on No. 2 ranked Nebraska-Kearney at 5 pm on Thursday night, November 21.








Brehm finished the match with 24 kills and 20 digs, hitting .279 in the match. Brehm now has 1,016 kills in her career and sits just eight kills outside of the top ten in that career category.

Emalee Lowe had 22 digs, while Morgan Nash had a double-double with 40 assists and 11 digs. Alicia Pickett finished with seven kills and five blocks.

Fort Hays (7-21, 4-16 MIAA) was led by Delaney Humm with 20 kills and 19 digs.

The Lions led 12-9 midway through the first set after a kill from Brehm that forced a FHSU timeout. The lead was 17-13, forcing another Tigers' timeout. An ace from Pickett finished off the set for the Lions.

The second set saw six tied scores and four lead changes. Southern led 8-4 early on, forcing a Tigers' timeout. FHSU tied the score at nine and went ahead 10-9 on the next play. From there, the teams were separated by three points or less until a 5-1 run from FHSU gave the Tigers a 22-16 lead and forced a Lions' timeout. The TIgers scored the final three points of the set to take set two.

The two teams traded points in set three, before the Tigers took a 14-12 lead to force a Southern timeout. The Tigers finished the set on an 11-6 run.

Southern led 16-11in set four and FHSU had to call a timeout. The Lions lead was one (19-18) as Southern called a timeout, and the Lions had to call another timeout after FHSU went up 23-21. The Tigers closed out the set for the win.

The Lions will be back in action on Thursday night, November 21 as Southern will take on No. 2 ranked Nebraska-Kearney in the first round of the 2019 MIAA Volleyball Tournament. First serve will be 5 pm.
