MSSU softball signs four recruits

Head Missouri Southern softball coach Hallie Blackney has announced the signing of four recruits to lead off this year's signing period.

"We are very excited to add these four student-athletes to our program. Individually, they bring speed, athleticism, and an overall strong knowledge of the game. They all come from winning programs and understand what it takes to be successful on and off the field. These are four great people and Lions everywhere should be proud!" coach Blackney described.

Below is a look at all four-incoming freshman and their success throughout high school.








MSSU Softball 2020 Recruiting Class

Kara Amos
Amos steps onto the Missouri Southern campus after pitching during her four years for the for Truman High School Patriots. The four-year letter winner registered a record of 11-3 with 131 strikeouts and a 0.59 ERA as a sophomore on the way to landing on the Examiner All-Area, All-Suburban Big Six, All-district, All-region first team to go along with a second-team selection on the Missouri Fastpitch Coaches Association All-State squad and helped lead the Patriots to a 23-6 record to finish the 2017 season.
As a junior, she followed it up by breaking single-season school records in batting average (.620), hits (57), and doubles (19) to conclude the 2018 season as the first of back-to-back District titles for the Patriots.

Overall, the Independence, Missouri native has been named a first-team All-district pitcher and utility player, first-team All-Region pitcher and utility player, second-team All-Region pitcher, second-team All-Region utility player, first-team All-State utility player, and second-team All-State pitcher throughout her scholastic career on top of graduating with 441 strikeouts in the circle and 155 hits at the plate and holding the career mark in doubles (54).

She is the daughter of Erica and Mark Amos and plans on majoring in graphic design and digital marketing during her time at Southern.

Grace Parrott

Parrott, the sister of current Lions' outfielder Lynnlee, steps onto the Missouri Southern campus from Sherwood Cass R-VIII High School. The four-year letter winner assisted the Lady Marksmen to one conference championship in 2018, two district titles in 2016 and 2019, and ultimately a state championship in 2019.

On top of winning a championship to close out her scholastic career, Parrott will leave Sherwood as the career leader in six softball records which include batting average (.563), total hits (179), runs scored (153), singles (131), doubles (28), and triples (16). She also holds three single-season records as well for batting average (.654), runs scored (50), and triples (nine). All of her records rank among the top-30 of the Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA).

The four-time first-team All-Conference and All-district selection has also landed on the All-Region first team three times and All-State and All-Region second team each once along with a first-team All-State as a senior.

Off the field, Parrott ran track during her freshman, sophomore, and junior years and played point guard for the basketball program all four years during the winner season. As a sophomore, she became an All-State runner in the 800-meter run event while finishing at a time of 2:24.24 for her tenth school record. The momentum carried over into her junior season as the track and field program took home the conference championship.

She is the daughter of Dianna and Charles with the plan to dual major in early childhood education and elementary education during her time at Southern.








Yazmin Vargas
Vargas steps onto the Missouri Southern campus with versatility after pitching and playing second base and shortstop for the Garden City Senior High School Buffalo. The four-year letter winner's ability at the plate was evident at the completion of her freshman season where she finished tied for the team lead in hits (39) and runs scored (44) towards a spot on the 6A All-State second team in assisting the team to a third-place finish in the state tournament.


The three-time first-team All-Western Athletic Conference player followed up the impressive freshman campaign with a record-breaking sophomore season. Vargas was named the Telegram's Softball/Baseball Player of the Year and earned her second-consecutive second-team All-State honor after setting school records for batting average (.579), hits (44), runs scored (37), and triples (10) in a single season on top of logging a 5-1 record and 37 strikeouts for an ERA of 2.57 from inside the circle.

She is daughter of Yadira Vargas and intends on majoring in radiology during her time at Southern.
Adrianna YoungYoung steps on to the Missouri Campus after splitting time between the infield and outfielder for the Tulsa Union High School Lady Redskins. The Tulsa, Oklahoma native was named All-district four years in row leading to a first-team All-Large East State honor by the Oklahoma High School Fastpitch Softball Coaches Association as a senior. Her efforts led to being spotlighted in the Oklahoma magazine where she touched on her role models and state tournament aspirations.

Off the field, Young competed as a sprinter for the track and field team and served as a member of the National Honors Society for two years as well.

She is the daughter of Lupita Romero and Gene Young and plans on majoring in a combination of physical therapy and sports medicine during her time at Southern.
