Late run lifts MSSU men over Minnesota State

Kansas City, Mo. -- The Missouri Southern Men's Basketball team went on a 12-2 run late in the second half and held on to defeat Minnesota State 74-69 in the second game of the MIAA/NSIC Challenge held at historic Municipal Auditorium in Kansas City.

The Lions (2-0) were led by Cam Martin who scored 22 points and went 10-of-12 from the free throw line, while pulling down eight rebounds and dishing out a team-high four assists. Parker Jennings scored 16 points on 3-for-5 from long-range, while Elyjah Clark scored 12 and pulled down seven rebounds. Kinzer Lambert had eight points and a team-high nine rebounds.








Minnesota State (0-2) had four score in double-figures, led by 19 points off the bench from Corvon Seales.

MSU opened up a 10-point advantage at the mid-way point of the first half as a three from Ryland Holt made the score 17-7 with 11:21 left in the half. A three from Jennings with 6:59 left gave the Lions the lead at 23-22, while a three from Braelon Walker capped a 21-7 run by the Lions to give Southern a 28-24 lead with 4:46 to go in the half.

The Southern lead reached six (34-28) after a pair of freebies from Jennings with 3:29 to go, but a late jumper from the Mavericks gave the Lions a 40-37 lead at the break.

The second half was tied five times, the last at 58 all when a three from Walker tied it with 8:19 left on the clock. Including that bucket, the Lions went on a 12-2 run to lead 67-60 with 3:42 left in the game. MSU would get as close as two (71-69) with 31 seconds left, but the Lions got three free throws down the stretch to seal the win.

The Lions shot 38 percent from the field in the game and 81 percent from the free throw line. Southern forced 11 MSU turnovers, socring 16 points off of the miscues.

Southern will be back in action next Sunday when the Lions play host to the University of Saint Mary at 3 pm from the Leggett & Platt Athletic Center.
